UNESCO/ONRG Seminar "Electromagnetic Fields: Mechanisms of action and potential threat as a terrorism agent"November 3, 2008
There is more and more use of electricity and RF communication frequencies in both civilian life and for military purposes. The clarification of cellular and molecular mechanisms of their biological effects is extremely important in order to rationally evaluate their harmful effects from the point of public health. Moreover, the possibility to using EMF-induced modulations makes EMF potentially a powerful instrument for environmental terror. The most obvious danger is use of electromagnetic pulses to disrupt communication. However EMF also pose direct threats to human health through mechanisms that are poorly understood. These involve different physical and chemical factors, as well as multiple effects on biological systems including humans. Therefore, this problem is an appropriate and important subject for consideration under the Environmental Antiterrorism Program. The primary goal of the proposed Workshop is to conduct a multidisciplinary discussion of the data obtained by different laboratories on the mechanisms whereby EMF of various frequencies alter function of physical and biological systems, what are the public health implications of these actions, and what are the dangers and potential of use of EMF as a terrorist weapon.

Current Trends in Health & Safety Risk Assessment of Work-Related Exposure to EMFs

14-16 February 2007 in Milan, Italy

The scientific program is now available on line.

Several practical problems of risk assessment exist for work-related EMF exposure and implementation of EMF exposure limits in workplaces for the European Directive on EMF and worker safety. These include gaps in knowledge on actual exposure and the need for practical methods for risk characterisation and exposure assessments for specific workplaces.

The interdisciplinary approach of this workshop aims to summarize the current scientific knowledge and uncertainties. It will promote discussion between scientists, national radiation protection authorities and relevant stakeholders for all frequency ranges, from static to RF fields, in relation to the EC Directive 2004/40/EC on health and safety requirements for workers. Special attention will be given to compliance testing, measurement uncertainty/numerical dosimetry, needs of pregnant workers and those with medical electronic implants.

FGF Workshop: Do children represent an especially sensitive group of EMF exposed people? Current state of the artNovember 27, 2006
The workshop will take place in Stuttgart, Germany from November 27 -29. Of central importance will be the question if children and pregnant women represent an especially sensitive group as to exposure in radiofrequent electromagnetic fields. Many scientific reports and statements have been published on this problem. The state of the art in this area had been presented for the last time at the WHO Workshop 2004 in Istanbul. At the FGF workshop current ongoing and planned investigations will be presented and the specific demand for other projects will be defined.
Prefaced by an introduction in child development and risk assessment for children and pregnant women the workshop will have four main parts:
Dosimetry
Epidemiology
Animal and in vitro studies
Volunteer studies
This workshop is mainly by invitation and has a limited number of participants. Nevertheless, you are invited to send an abstract for presentation or to declare your interest for participation. Deadline for application is November, 3th.

Second Course of Bioelectromagnetics at Erice School AnnouncedAugust 31, 2005
EMF and Genotoxicity will be the topic of study at the Erice School of Bioelectromagnetics in October.

Maria Rosaria Scarfi of CNR, the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of Environment, Naples, Italy, and Vijayalaxmi of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, directors of the Second Course, “Electromagnetic Fields and Genotoxicity” to be held in Erice, Sicily, Italy, on October 2–9, 2005, have announced the outline and faculty for the course.

The second Course of the School will cover different aspects of genotoxicity in relation to electromagnetic field exposure, including a discussion on recent results on in vivo and in vitro studies in lectures, seminars and discussions where senior scientists will share their own experience, according to organizers. The last day will be partially devoted to oral and poster presentations by participants. A diploma will be awarded by a Scientific Committee to the author of the best poster.

Ferdinando Bersani of the University of Bologna, Italy, is Director of the International School of Bioelectromagnetics “Alessandro Chiabrera” at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture.

The faculty includes not only Bersani, Scarfi and Vijayalaxmi, but R. Tice of the US NIEHS; D. Lloyd of the UK Health Protection Agency; G. Obe of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany; H. Norppa and J. Juutilainen of the University of Kuopio, Finland; L. Verschaeve, VITO, Belgium; M. Simko, University of Rostock; J. McNamee of Health Canada; N. Kuster of ETH, Switzerland; R. Barale of the University of Pisa; C. Maercker of the University of Heidelberg; H. Rüdiger of the University of Vienna; R. Tauber of the University of Hamburg; B.D. Görlitz of ITEM, Germany; L. Stronati of ENEA, Rome, and F. Merlo and S. Bonassi of IST, Genoa, Italy.

The week of presentations will feature several seminars, on topics including the problem of replication in science, on performing the in vitro micronucleus assay, on molecular techniques in cytogenetics, and on statistical methods in micronucleus studies. Further, a symposium on recent investigations on EMF genotoxicity is planned, plus an assessment of replication studies, and a tutorial on in vitro/in vivo ELF exposure systems. Results of genotoxicity studies with exposure in both the ELF and RF frequency bands will be discussed in detail in guided discussions. A round table organized by the European Coordination Action EMF-NET on the state of the art and future perspectives for genotoxic effects of EMF, will conclude the week.

Participation fee is 1200 €, which includes food and lodging. Interested candidates should send an e-mail to Scarfi and Vijay at: ebea-icembschool@icemb.org with a short Curriculum Vitae, a statement of scientific interest , and for young researchers, a letter of recommendation of a Senior Scientist. Deadline for applications is September 26, 2005. Participants should plan to arrive in Erice on Oct. 1 not later than 6 p.m. and depart on Oct. 9.
